I think this audio may already be out there, but I was listening to this tape on Friday and figured I'd share it. This is a Stretch and Bobbito tape dated July 25th, 1996. Mr. Live and Tony Bones are in the studio.
Hear as Stretch and Bob discuss how Rick Rubin "practically had to run to the bathroom and play with his Wurlitzer" upon hearing that Stretch's sister's best friend's mother's boyfriend was the drummer who played on Billy Squire's Big Beat...

As a bonus, here's the other side of the tape, July 18th, 1996, with Benny B and DJ Eclipse filling in for Stretch and Bobbito...

Well, maybe not ever, but these are amazing. There's a Carvel about 20 minutes from my house. It's walls are covered with quotes from Tom Carvel himself. One of them reads:
"Franchisees say I'm crazy, and that my commercials stink."
Amen
Let's see what warranted that quote.
I love how Carvel says "Please visit them" at the end of the commercial. It sounds almost like a plea...
From Wikipedia-
There was a holiday version of Cookie Puss specific to Saint Patrick's Day, called Cookie O'Puss. It was similar to the original but with green icing accents and a leprechaun-style hat. This product was pulled from shelves in March, 1997 after the Irish American Anti Defamation League issued a statement stating that Cookie O'Puss "furthered an image of hard drinking and reckless behavior by Irish Americans".
Meanwhile, this kid is having the time of his life...
This jingle sounds oddly similar to the one immediately above...
But the C.P. don't stand for no Cookie Puss...
Somebody synched some Carvel audio to this video, and it really freaks me out. It falls apart about 35 seconds in, but 1:00 is rock bottom. This is some sorts of fucked up...
When Rhino released the 5-Disc Sugar Hill Records Story box set years back (well, 1999), the Treacherous Three's Action was nowhere to be found on it. I will never understand how it didn't make the cut. Also left off was Crash Crew's On The Radio and Mean Machine's Disco Dream, but they were included on the one-cassette Best of Sugar Hill Records release that Rhino put out around the same time (and yes, that's how they suckered me into buying the cassette too).
The thing with Sugar Hill Records is I always seem to find alternate mixes of their tracks that I never knew existed. When I searched for Action on youtube, the first result was this version, with a totally different mix. I can hear more ad libs by Kool Moe Dee, Special K and LA Sunshine towards the beginning, but overall it seems to be a sparser mix. I prefer the 12" version over this one, but that's usually how it works... you go with what you heard initially.
I find it interesting that as the vocal mix fades out (in the 12" version), you hear Kool Moe Dee (?) say "Furious 5 emcees!" That never made sense to me, especially since around this time there was tension between the two crews, and even talks of a potential battle. It doesn't sound like Moe Dee is calling them out in the fade out, it just sounds more like he's shouting them out or something. Whatever, this label has always been mysterious to me. Maybe I should stop listening that close to the fade outs of songs. Jokes on me!
Furious 5 Fade Out (Boosted) -
Here's audio from Treacherous Three's 2nd Anniversary, with Moe Dee calling out the Furious Five to battle:
(Special thanks to Big Dan for giving me the Treacherous Three cassette!)
Off-topic from this post, but...
I realize in my last post I didn't say much about GURU. I think most people feel the same way I do, deeply saddened and at a loss for how to put his influence and legacy into words. He is responsible for some of the best music ever created in this genre, and nobody was debating that when he was alive either... it's legit. It is heartbreaking that such an irreplaceable talent left us at such a young age. I'm going to bump Statik Selektah's Shade 45 Tribute right now!
This month's pointless goal is to finally beat Marble Madness for Nintendo. It probably doesn't look that difficult, but I always fail on the last level. Don't get me wrong though, it's not like I've been trying nonstop for years and years, I've just played it casually once in a blue moon from age 3 or 4 to ... 23. It's time to stop bullshitting and make it happen. This month I make the transition from casual player to "less-casual" player.
If you're going to front on a ridiculous gamer post, don't front on the game's music. Let's do this.
Looking at these various youtube clips, I'm seeing that different versions of the game have varied music. Let's nerd out and listen to the differences:
Which one do you like better???
* Crickets *
And finally, I'm not mad at this either:
So laugh, guffaw, talk smack... just say what you wanna say.
Cue... LOVEBUG STARSKI!
Remind me not to do any late night posts again anytime soon.
I'll be performing live in Malden this Saturday alongside Raheem Jamal, with Top Choice Clique, Esoteric and Blacastan also in the place. Come through, it'll be a good one!
Just getting word that an unreleased Godfather Don project will be seeing the light of day on June 8th. This apparently is the album that would have come out after Diabolique. I was able to obtain a few snippets, so check 'em out and see what you think!
I've seen this event talked about a lot online, but I don't think I've seen an actual article on it floating around, so here we go. This is an official recap of the events that took place on May 24th, 1992 at the 369th Regiment Armory in Harlem. Freddie Foxxx, Willie D, and Melle Mel were among the artists who put on the boxing gloves and stepped into the ring to show their skills. How did it go? Peep the article. Best believe that Freddie Foxxx was talking trash about Tim Dog for making a record called Step To Me and then failing to show at the event. * Collar Tug *
For music fans in general, Duck Rock and D'ya Like Scratchin' are essentials. They need to be properly reissued! Musical styles from South Africa, Northern, Central and Southern America, and the Caribbean are represented together on these offerings, with the result being a very enjoyable listen. Session musicians include Thomas Dolby, Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens, Trevor Horn, Anne Dudeley, and J.J. Jeczalik (the latter three of Art of Noise fame). Duck Rock also contains timeless skits from the World Famous Supreme Team show on 105.9 WHBI (The duo also appears on Scratchin). Countless vocal samples have been lifted from these skits...
Recently, Pabst Blue Ribbon commissioned yours truly (and a few other like-minded artists) to put together some funky PBR promo tracks. The result: Pabst Raps, a limited edition blue-colored vinyl 45 dropping this spring / summer. Here's the official "trailer" I put together, featuring one of my cuts, Rocketbelt. And yes, the footage is from an actual Pabst Blue Ribbon Ad from the 70s. They don't make 'em like they used to. Now, strap on a rocketbelt and check it out:
My main man Esoteric is back once again on May 18th with his latest offering, Fly Casualties. Brand new tracks, remixes, unreleased original versions of songs, and unclassifiable material previously tucked away in the Pterolab vaults will now see the light of day. Fly Casualties will no doubt tide over fans awaiting 1212, 7L & Esoteric's first full-length studio album as a duo since 2006's A New Dope.

I'm happy to announce that the coming months will see the release of two more Cold Chillin' deluxe reissues. First up, Roxanne Shante's Bad Sister, followed by MC Shan's sophomore release, Born To Be Wild. As always, each disc will include bonus audio, never-before-seen artwork, and more.
There's so many incredible tracks between these two expanded releases... I Pioneered This, Have A Nice Day, Juice Crew Law, Brothers Ain't Shit, Words of a Freestyle, both title tracks, Skeezer, Live On Stage, and the list goes on. I've had a great time talking with both Shante and MC Shan about their respective releases. Here's an excerpt from the Bad Sister liner notes:
Today, Shante recalls her time as a Cold Chillin’ artist with honesty and clarity. “Overall, my recording career with Cold Chillin’ was definitely a prerequisite for life in general. I was able to deal with so many different personalities. With the fellas who sometimes wrote lyrics for me, like Kane and Biz and Shan, I love the fact that we kept it very close-knit to the extent that they could actually write songs for me, and it would sound like something Shante would say. We actually came up with the phrase, ‘Now that sounds Shante-ish,’ meaning it was sassy enough, contained enough profanity, was quick-witted, and had a very fast delivery to match Shante’s personality. So with Bad Sister, I would say that I was very happy with the outcome of the album. Just the fact that I was able to sit back, hear it and say ‘Wow, I’m really feeling like that today.’ I would say the title track describes the type of life I wanted to have, or the type of life we felt the public thought I had. They thought I had this big bed and this bath that you step into with men washing you up. They didn’t know that I was still in the hood barely surviving, but it gave me a chance to mentally go to a whole different place and I think it even reflected what my Cold Chillin’ brothers wanted me to have. They would rhyme about all of these elaborate things and I’d be like, ‘*Pshh*, wouldn’t it be good if I had all that!’ I know that when Cold Chillin’ decided to band with Warner Brothers, we thought we were
going to get Bugs Bunny money. I was lucky if I got a carrot.”
And here's a clip of DJ Pete Rock having a little fun with the Juice Crew Law 12" on the In Control Show:
MC Shan- Juice Crew Law (12" Version) on In Control Show, 107.5 WBLS - April 29, 1989 -
Werner Von Wallenrod recently had a thorough post on Shan's Juice Crew Law 12". Hands down the 12" version is much heavier, from bass line to drums. You can bet it will be on the reissue.
Be sure to keep an eye out for both of these this summer! Speaking of summer, we just had a beautiful weekend up here in Boston. Pretty soon I'll be dressing like this dude:
